One of the nicest features of Mozy is that you can keep your own encryption key. Some services, such as streamload, don’t even encrypt your data. Other services encrypt it, but they keep the private key. Mozy will either keep the key for you, or let you keep your own.

Mozy is a online backup company that gives you your first 2 GB free. You simply choose which files you want to back up and when your computer is on but not being used it will backup those files to the server. I’ve been using them for a while and so far it’s pretty cool.

Yep, for the fourth time in two years, and the third time in nine months, the computer has crashed.
Random videos … gone. Including my torrents of the latest series of Doctor Who. (That really made me cry, by the way.)
Vast music library … mostly gone. All of my iTunes stuff has been backed up, but all of the other cds that I’ve traded on La La (80+ cds) and the albums I’ve downloaded on Jamendo and my free album of Tori Amos’s Scarlet’s Walk (which I got for free in the Sony BMG settlement) are lost to the ether.
Thankfully, I’ve got an account over at Mozy Backup, so all of the truly important files and stuff (and my photos, which are also backed up on Flickr, thank God) have been backed up online.

So remember, kids, when disaster strikes, it’s too late to think about backup.

This appears to be the closest yet to what I’ve been searching for quite some time: Dead simple, lightweight little app that just backs up data to an offsite server.

Don’t mind if we do…

I like the security that comes from having my important files in a secure place. Yes, you can go and burn CDs or DVDs of all of your files; but that takes a long time and you have to keep updating as soon as there are new files. And having your files online means that you’ll be able to retrieve your data, even if your house burns down. It’s cheaper than buying an external hard drive, and Mozy does all of the work for me. Seriously, this is a great website… I can’t recommend this service enough.

My only complaint is about restoring files: you can select the files you want to restore online, but the interface is pretty stiff. You’re limited to 5 restores a month and you get the restored files by email. It would be nice if you could manage restoring files using the same local client.

Well, the people have spoken and the Mozy has answered. Mozy’s latest build includes a slick restore function with the client, and I’ll bet if you begged, you could get more than 5 restores, if you really, really needed them.

There are a number of online backup services springing up, but Mozy Backup is the only one I’ve seen that (1) gives you a really substantial free allocation, and (2) lets you encrypt your backup data.

Who wants to be like everyone else anyways?
